Your bundles of joy are everything to you, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be handfuls; double trouble if you will. Going to the store with both of them can seem like a harrowing adventure, much less going on a whole vacation. You, more than any other parent, probably could use a well-earned vacation. But is it worth the hassle?
Traveling with twins can be challenging, even for the “parent of the year,” but it certainly isn’t impossible. Sure you may have "roll with the punches" a little more than you’re used to, but you can absolutely have a great time. If you’re hoping to get away with your twins, here are a few tips that will help make it more convenient and maybe even help you keep the peace.
Come equipped for a great time.
The parents of twins are superheroes, and like all superheroes, you need the right equipment to save the day. Wonder Woman wouldn’t go anywhere without her magic lasso, so why should you? If you’re a new parent with young twins, getting in and out of the car can feel cumbersome. Transferring both of your babies from car seat to stroller can end in a dramatic string of emotions felt by both parents and children, especially if it’s naptime. If you don’t already have a twin car seats and stroller combo, it’s exactly what you need to make the vacation go smoothly. Did your babies fall asleep while driving from the Isle of Palms into Charleston, but you have a lunch reservation to get to, so you can’t wait for their nap to be over? No problem. Gently pop out the car seat and pop it into the stroller. Streamlining transportation will make your vacation a much more relaxed event.
Treat yourself…within reason.
Part of the fun of going on vacation is getting some new clothes to accompany you on your adventure. Parenthood is hard, and if your summer clothes don’t fit from the previous year, don’t fret. You won’t want to be uncomfortable in your old threads for the entire trip, but you also don’t want to break the bank buying new outfits. Clothing twins is costly enough already. Get fashionable, comfortable clothes for a fraction of the regular price by finding a summer sale at your favorite store. Shop for clothes you can move in, so you can play with your kids on the beach or wherever you’re vacationing. Getting your clothes at a reasonable price means if there’s an incident with spit up, you won’t feel guilty about the money you spent.
Location! Location! Location!
Depending on the age of your twins, right now might not be the time for your eight stop European adventure. Pick a vacation that is conducive to your family’s specific needs. If your kids are young and like to run around, taking them to a big city will be stressful whenever you’re out on the streets. A slower-paced beach getaway might be exactly what everyone needs to have a great time. On the other hand, if you have older twins that love learning, a city like Chicago, with its many museums and lakefront might hold a lot of entertainment for everyone. Reading the situation is highly important to a successful trip. Even if you had tickets to something you know your kids will love, if everyone is crabby from a high energy activity the day before, see if you can reschedule. It’s only fun if everyone’s having a good time.
Call in the backup.
Have you vacationed with your parents in a while? How about your twins’ favorite aunt and uncle? Bringing the family along can ensure that you and your partner get a little alone time to unwind on vacation. It also means more hands to help when you’re out in public. Call in backup when you need it. You don’t have to spend the whole trip together. Your family will love the chance to make vacation memories with your twins and you’ll love the extra support.
